Zusammenfassung

This volume draws together chapters which represent some of the most up-to-date, cutting-edge research on the Second World War and on war and social change in the twentieth century.

It characterises the Second World War as a mobile war of peoples and addresses the intersections between imperialism and race, the recovery of non-White experience, new colonial military histories, the relationship between home and fighting fronts, and extended temporal frameworks. The book is rooted in the conviction that the Second World War was a total war and that scholarship should reflect this reality. It integrates national histories with personal and global perspectives and, above all, addresses questions of racial and ethnic difference. By taking a transnational approach that draws upon the research of a diverse group of historians, Global Narratives aims to contribute to the burgeoning global scholarship which is resetting the scholarly agenda within Second World War Studies.

This book sits at the intersection of Second World War Studies and Global Histories and is aimed at a broad academic audience. It will be of interest to social, cultural, and military historians as well as suitable for undergraduate and graduate students as a supplementary text which provides secondary reading.

Wendy Ugolini is an award-winning historian specialising in ethnicities and identity formation in wartime Britain. She is Professor of Second World War Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her first book, Experiencing War as the 'Enemy Other' received the Royal Historical Society's Gladstone Prize whilst her most recent book, Wales in England 1914-1945 was long-listed for the Templer Medal. She is Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded project, Beyond Borders. The Second World War, National Identities & Empire in the UK which addresses the identity constructions of British service personnel who were mobilised across the British Empire at war.

Gary Sheffield is Visiting Professor in the Defence Studies Department, King's College London. He has published widely on military history, especially of the armies of the British Empire in the two world wars. He is completing a book on the experience of British and Dominion soldiers in 1914-18 and 1939-45.

John Buckley is Professor of Military History in the Department of History and War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He is the author of a number of books, including Monty's Men (2013) for which he won the Society for Army Historical Research's Templer Medal. He is currently working on a study of Operation Market Garden.
