Zusammenfassung

In a city where politics and organized crime are inseparable, loyalty can be the most dangerous gamble of all. When the son of a powerful senator is found murdered in the street, suspicion falls on Paul Madvig, the ruthless political boss who controls the city's corrupt machinery. Madvig has plenty of enemies, a complicated relationship with the victim's family, and a dangerous ambition: marrying the senator's beautiful daughter. Only one man seems determined to discover the truth. Ned Beaumont is a gambler, political fixer, and Madvig's closest confidant. Intelligent, calculating, and fiercely independent, Beaumont knows that the murder threatens far more than his friend's freedom. Rival gangsters are circling, political alliances are collapsing, and the city's carefully balanced criminal empire is on the verge of war. As Beaumont follows a trail of deception, blackmail, and violence, he finds himself caught between powerful men who will stop at nothing to protect their interests. Every revelation raises new questions, and every act of loyalty carries a price. But in a world built on corruption, can anyone afford to tell the truth? First published in book form in 1931, The Glass Key is one of Dashiell Hammett's finest achievements, a brilliantly constructed tale of political intrigue, moral ambiguity, and psychological suspense. With its razor-sharp dialogue, unsentimental realism, and unforgettable protagonist, the novel helped define American hardboiled crime fiction. A landmark of the genre from the author of The Maltese Falcon, Red Harvest, and The Thin Man, The Glass Key inspired two Hollywood films and influenced generations of crime writers and filmmakers.

Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) was an American novelist and short-story writer whose groundbreaking crime fiction transformed the detective genre. Born in Maryland, Hammett worked as an operative for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, an experience that gave his fiction an unusual authenticity and a keen understanding of crime, corruption, and human behavior. Rejecting the genteel conventions of traditional detective fiction, Hammett introduced a harder, more realistic approach characterized by clipped dialogue, morally complex characters, and an unflinching depiction of violence and corruption. His five novels-Red Harvest (1929), The Dain Curse (1929), The Maltese Falcon (1930), The Glass Key (1931), and The Thin Man (1934)-established him as one of the most influential writers in the history of American crime fiction. His creations include Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, and the Continental Op. His influence extends beyond literature into film noir, modern thrillers, and contemporary detective fiction.
