Tina Geary is an IT lead running simulations for government agencies. She develops ideas to improve the capability and profitability of her company. When summoned to company headquarters to be offered a promotion, her CEO and his staff discover that she has a disability and gets around in a wheelchair.

Ron Geary, Tina's brother, has a degree in physics, and he is an enthusiastic elementary school teacher. When an unusual vision problem occurs in one of his students, he gains some insight into its cause. His insight proves useful to university and government teams working to solve the vision issue. Tina's simulation capabilities are also important toward understanding the causes and impacts of the vision problem. Tina and Ron are asked to join the team of scientists.

While Tina's team continues running simulation queries, Tina begins to wonder if the characters in her simulations are sentient. Are they conscious? Are they self-aware? Could they know they are in a simulation?
