The Story Behind This Book
There are moments in life that arrive quietly, looking ordinary, only for us to realise years later that they changed the direction of everything.
This story begins long before I owned a business, became a husband, or understood the weight responsibility could place on the human mind. It begins with a sixteen year old boy whose childhood did not end through ceremony. Life simply demanded maturity before he was ready.
While many of my friends were thinking about tomorrow, I was learning how to survive today. Decisions could not wait for maturity, and burdens did not ask whether I was emotionally prepared. At the time, I mistook responsibility for strength, and people praised the maturity they could see.
Very few stopped to ask what that responsibility was quietly taking away. No one saw the fears I learned to hide, the conversations I never had, or the parts of childhood that disappeared while everyone congratulated me for being responsible. I carried responsibilities, yet I also carried silence.
Over time, responsibility became familiar and eventually became part of my identity. I learned to keep moving, solve problems, make difficult decisions, and function regardless of how I felt. That ability became one of my greatest strengths, yet it also became one of my greatest weaknesses.
Four years later, at the age of twenty seven, I got married. I carried into marriage the same determination I had carried into business. I wanted to build a family, a future, and a home filled with stability. I genuinely believed that if I worked hard enough, loved deeply enough, and remained committed enough, everything would eventually find its rightful place.Life is rarely that predictable. Some lessons cannot be learned through ambition alone. They are learned through disappointment. Others are learned through loss. Some only become visible after something precious begins to break.By the age of thirty three, I had earned my first million Rand. People celebrated. Some congratulated me. Others called me successful. From the outside, they were probably right.
. No one saw the pressure that came with maintaining momentum. No one saw the increasing expectations. No one saw the decisions that kept me awake long after everyone else had gone to sleep. No one saw how responsibility continued to accumulate while my capacity to carry it quietly diminished.By the age of thirty seven, I had become the father of six beautiful children. To this day, they remain among God's greatest gifts in my life. Whenever I look at them, my first thought is not responsibility. My first thought is grace.
My children have given me reasons to continue during seasons when stopping would have been easier. Another story was quietly unfolding beneath the surface, even during those beautiful moments. I had achieved many things. I had built businesses, created employment, supported families, opened opportunities for others, and encouraged people who had begun losing hope.Pressure enters. Movement follows. The foundation weakens. Collapse becomes a possibility long before it becomes visible.
