Zusammenfassung

In the spring of 1798, a French army crossed into Switzerland and shattered a political order five centuries in the making. Within six catastrophic weeks, the Old Swiss Confederacy ? a patchwork of sovereign cantons, subject territories, and patrician oligarchies ? collapsed entirely. What rose in its place was an extraordinary and doomed experiment: the Helvetic Republic, a centralized nation built on borrowed French institutions, a constitution stripped of its own promised ratification, and a population divided between Radicals, Moderates, and Federalists who could never agree on where legitimate power belonged. Four coups. A brutal suppression at Nidwalden. Peasants burning tax archives in Vaud. A currency no one could afford to mint. A government fleeing before its own citizens. And finally, Napoleon himself forced to mediate a settlement between the extremes his own invasion had unleashed. This is the story of Switzerland's lost revolutionary republic ? five turbulent years that nineteenth-century historians dismissed as foreign imposition, but that in fact built the hidden foundations of the modern Swiss state: its citizenship, its multilingual identity, its communal law, its very idea of federal balance. William Ua Cellaig traces, chapter by chapter, how a republic that failed at everything it set out to do succeeded, almost by accident, at building something better.

William Ua Cellaig writes narrative history from a farmhouse outside Ennistymon, County Clare, where a shelf of well-worn Alpine maps testifies to a lifelong fascination with Switzerland's improbable path to nationhood. Trained in history before turning to independent research and writing, he has spent the past decade tracing the revolutionary movements that reshaped small European states in the shadow of larger powers, with particular attention to the institutions that outlast the upheavals that created them. His work favours the overlooked hinge-moments of European history ? the years when a nation's future was genuinely undecided ? and he brings to them the same patient attention to primary detail that Irish local historians have long applied closer to home. He lives in Clare with his family and an ever-expanding collection of nineteenth-century atlases.
