Echoes in the City

When the streets of Philadelphia go quiet, the fountain still sings.

Laila never wanted to be a steward of secrets. She only carried a notebook, a piece of chalk, and a vow she couldn't abandon: listen, and keep the doors kind. But when people begin to vanish, grief turns into protest, and lies threaten to shatter the fragile Machine at the city's heart, she is thrust into a mystery bigger than herself.

Whispers spread of a fifth note-a sound that doesn't belong, a sign of something more. As the city edges toward collapse, Laila discovers hidden guardians: a girl with a lantern who appears in reflections, and a newborn whose cries steady the Machine itself. Together, they carry her when she cannot stand alone.

But not everyone wants patience. Some demand miracles, others sell promises, and one False Steward will risk tearing the city apart to claim power. Between truth and betrayal, absence and return, Laila must decide: will she hold the vow, or will Philadelphia lose its voice forever?
